The AmeriCorps Urban Safety Project at Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies works to promote safety and community in Detroit. We help create new block clubs and foster established organizations to help increase neighborhood community. The AmeriCorps Urban Safety project is designed to build a culture of neighborly communication and responsibility in the city of Detroit. In order to reduce crime in the area, we are working with local residents to create block clubs, a forum for residents to connect and create neighborhood safety strategies. This initiative provides the spark for a network of residents that will continue their crime-fighting efforts well after the program has moved on. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America is a non-profit organization with a mission to improving the quality of life for people with asthma and allergic diseases through education, advocacy and research. The AAFA conducts education and training programs for children, families, educators, child care providers, healthcare professionals and workplaces. Children’s Hospital of Michigan, a member of the Detroit Medical Center, is the first and most experienced pediatric specialty hospital in the state. The Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) is the public agency that administers and enforces the Michigan State family of construction codes, which regulates the construction and alteration of buildings throughout the state. The BSEED also ensures the proper maintenance of existing buildings and their environments by enforcing the City of Detroit Property Maintenance Code and the Official Zoning Ordinance, as well as overseeing the demolition of dangerous buildings to eliminate blight in the City. Additionally, the BSEED issues licenses for businesses in the City of Detroit through the Business License Center. As the holder and issuer of all business licenses, the BSEED assures that business owners seeking to obtain a license to operate in the City of Detroit meet all applicable legal standards before a license is issued or renewed. The mission of the City of Detroit Housing and Revitalization Department is to strengthen and revitalize the city of Detroit’s neighborhoods and communities and to stabilize and transform the city’s physical, social and economic environment. It is comprised of four divisions, including planning, real estate development, housing services and neighborhood support services. Founded in 1999,CLEARCorps Detroit works to prevent lead poisoning and create Healthy Homes for children and families through programs, education and outreach, and policy work. CLEARCorps Detroit is a member of the 501(c)(3) non-profit Southeastern Michigan Health Association and currently has four main programs. Healthy Homes Detroit addresses asthma, lead, and home safety issues through products, education, and repairs. The Lead Safe Homes Program abates lead hazards from homes in Detroit. Lead Talk educates on lead poisoning prevention, and targets families whose children have low to mid lead levels. The Education and Outreach program works with health fairs, Head Starts, and schools to bring information and resources about lead poisoning to both parents and children. The Detroit Green Skills Alliance (DGSA) is a designated Michigan Skills Alliance supported in part with funding and technical assistance provided by the State of Michigan. It is an independent industry alliance formed to serve the needs of businesses within the immediate Detroit area. DGSA has the dual purpose of assisting green economy businesses and organizations expand their capacity and create job opportunities and career pathways for Detroit workers. The goal of DGSA is to promote alignment of national, regional and local green industry policies with opportunities to support the expansion of Detroit area green businesses and job creation for citizens (workers) in the region. The Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) helps neighbors build communities in Detroit by providing capital, technical expertise, training, and information to develop local leadership in creating affordable housing, spurring economic development, and supporting safe neighborhoods. The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative was charged in 2008 by the Council on Foundations and the White House Office of Recovery to lead the national efforts to integrate lead hazard control, healthy homes, and weatherization and energy efficiency work. Raquel Castañeda-López, a lifelong Detroiter, grew up in Southwest Detroit. Castañeda-López made history by becoming the first Latina elected to the Detroit City Council in November 2013, her first attempt at an elected position. Reclaim Detroit was founded in 2011. It was developed as a part of EcoWorks (formerly known as WARM Training Center) centers deconstruction efforts and was kickstarted by job training through Detroit GreenWorks Solutions job training collaborative which includes Southwest Solutions, EcoWorks, Henry Ford Community College, The Greening of Detroit and the Detroit Department of Workforce Development. Reclaim Detroit’s primary focus is to divert as much material from Detroit’s 78,000 vacant structures from landfills as possible and will do so by using a process called Deconstruction. Southwest Housing Solutions began in 1979 and is a leader in the planning, development and management of affordable housing and commercial property in southwest Detroit. The Heat And Warmth Fund, THAW, is a leading provider of utility assistance for Michigan residents in need. We collaborate with our partners to deliver services that support long term energy solutions. The mission of Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency is to empower low-income people and strengthen communities through diverse services, leadership and collaboration. Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency (Wayne Metro) has been providing services to low and moderate income individuals and families since 1971. Since then, Wayne Metro has established a system of diversified programming and funding knowing that Wayne County residents need a source of reliable community support to help them succeed and thrive. For more than 30 years, the Center for Urban Studies has been engaged in cutting-edge social science research and service. Often, the Center collaborates with WSU faculty to combine their substantive expertise with the methodological skills of Center staff. They also work closely with community organizations and local governments to answer key questions about the metropolitan area and about policy or organizational issues. Young Detroit Builders is a YouthBuild USA-affiliated, non-profit organization that has been offering a comprehensive program of education, support services, counseling, leadership development, job and life skills preparation, on-the-job residential construction training and NCCER certification since 1996. Students can earn a modest living allowance while participating in this full-time, 10-month training program, and may be eligible for AmeriCorps educational awards for college.
