Tens of thousands of metro Detroiters are thought to be eligible for federal disaster assistance — but they have yet to apply. So authorities announced today that the deadline to apply has been extended to Dec. 14.

Renters as well as homeowners may qualify for grants or low-interest loans to cover damage to their homes and other losses caused by the record rainstorm Aug. 11. To apply, see www.disasterassistance.gov, call 800-621-3362 (7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily, with representatives who speak various languages), or visit the FEMA disaster recovery center in Detroit (open 8-6 Mon.-Sat., at Wayne County Community College, 8200 W.
